BJP, TMC Trade Barbs After SIR Officers Picketed For Eight Hours In Malda

BJP, TMC clash after officers picketed in Malda.

A political blame game has erupted in West Bengal after several judicial officers engaged in a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise were allegedly picketed for hours in Malda district, triggering sharp exchanges between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The incident, which unfolded in the Kaliachak area, has intensified tensions in the run-up to elections.

According to reports, at least seven judicial officers were surrounded by a group of protesters for nearly eight hours at a block office, with the standoff continuing into the night before security forces intervened. The agitation was reportedly sparked by anger among locals over deletion of names from electoral rolls during the revision process.

The BJP accused the TMC-led state government of a “complete breakdown of law and order,” alleging that administrative machinery failed to protect officials carrying out election-related duties. Party leaders said the incident reflects systemic issues in governance and demanded accountability from the state leadership.

The TMC, however, pushed back strongly, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee calling the episode a “conspiracy” and accusing the BJP of attempting to malign the state’s image. She urged people to remain calm and avoid targeting judicial or administrative officials, even as she questioned the role of central agencies and opposition narratives.

The incident has also drawn attention from the judiciary and the Election Commission. The Supreme Court expressed serious concern, describing the situation as indicative of a breakdown in law and order, while the Election Commission sought detailed reports from state authorities.

The confrontation highlights the high political stakes surrounding the ongoing electoral roll revision and upcoming elections in West Bengal. With both BJP and TMC stepping up rhetoric, the Malda episode has become a flashpoint in the broader contest for political dominance in the state, raising concerns over administrative neutrality and voter-related disputes.
