BJP Shatters TMC Dominance in West Bengal; Falta Seat Falls With Massive Victory
BJP wins Falta seat; TMC falls to fourth place.
Debangshu Panda of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a massive victory in the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal, winning the seat by more than 1.09 lakh votes. The result marked a significant political shift in the constituency, which had remained a stronghold of the All India Trinamool Congress since 2011.
According to the final results, Panda received 149,666votes, while Sambhu Nath Kurmi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) finished second with 40,645 votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla secured third place with 10,084 votes. TMC nominee Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth position with only 7,783 votes.
The result was particularly notable because the TMC had consistently retained the Falta seat for over a decade and had won it comfortably in the 2021 assembly elections with nearly 57 percent of the vote share. However, just days before the repoll, Jahangir Khan publicly announced that he would no longer remain in the contest, although his name stayed on the electronic voting machines because the deadline for withdrawal had already passed. The TMC described the decision as his personal choice.

With Panda’s victory, the BJP’s tally in the Election Commission records for the West Bengal Assembly polls rose to 208 seats. However, the party’s effective strength in the Assembly reportedly remained unchanged after senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari vacated the Nandigram seat while retaining the Bhabanipur constituency.
The outcome is expected to intensify political discussions in West Bengal, especially as the BJP continues efforts to expand its influence in regions previously dominated by the TMC. Analysts view the Falta result as a significant symbolic victory for the BJP, while the sharp decline in the TMC’s vote share in the constituency is likely to trigger political introspection within the ruling party.
