BJP Councillor Explains Reason for Not Greeting PM Modi on Stage

Ex-IPS officer R Sreelekha cites police discipline for staying seated during VVIP exit.

Former IPS Officer and Sasthamangalam Ward Councillor R Sreelekha addressed widespread social media speculation about her decision not to approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi on stage during his recent visit to Thiruvananthapuram. In a video shared on her Facebook story, the ex-DGP clarified that her action stemmed from strict adherence to police protocol and discipline cultivated over 33 years of service.

Sreelekha explained that she remained near her seat as the Prime Minister exited through the VVIP entrance, believing it inappropriate to approach him at that moment. “I am new to politics,” she said, “but discipline is very important to me. I have undertaken several VVIP duties in my life and thought I was expected to stay in position when the PM entered and left via the VVIP route.” Her placement on stage was due to her position as one of the BJP’s State Vice-Presidents.

The moment occurred on Friday afternoon during Modi’s visit for a party programme in the State Capital. As senior state leaders accompanied the Prime Minister off the stage, Sreelekha’s decision to stay put sparked online discussions and rumours of possible internal discord within the BJP. She reaffirmed her unwavering support for the party and dismissed any suggestion of rift.

Sreelekha, a retired Director General of Police, transitioned into active politics after her service. She had previously mentioned receiving assurances from state-level BJP leaders about the mayoral post in upcoming local body elections. Her measured explanation highlights how her long law enforcement background continues to shape her conduct in the political arena. The clarification has helped quell much of the online chatter, underscoring the importance of protocol in high-profile public events involving VVIPs.
