Assam Floods Disrupt Rail Operations, Multiple Trains Cancelled Or Suspended

Heavy flooding in Assam has disrupted railway operations, with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) cancelling, diverting and short-terminating several passenger trains on Monday. The decision was taken after floodwaters affected railway infrastructure in parts of the state, particularly in Sivasagar district. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 12 districts were affected by floods, impacting more than 1.7 lakh people. Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Buridihing, Dikhow, Disang and Dhansiri, were flowing above danger levels at certain locations due to heavy rainfall.

Sivasagar emerged as one of the worst-affected districts, with floodwaters submerging large areas and affecting normal life. The NFR said continuous heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas caused the Dikhow River to overflow, leading to severe flooding around Simaluguri town. The flood situation affected Simaluguri railway station, where water entered the station yard, railway tracks, railway colony and surrounding areas.

Railway officials said water had also crossed over the tracks in the Simaluguri section, making train operations unsafe. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said train movement between the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections had been suspended due to the flood conditions. The railway authority said passenger safety and operational requirements were the primary reasons behind the temporary suspension. Several long-distance trains operating from or towards Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in upper Assam were diverted through the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route to avoid the affected sections.

Additionally, multiple local passenger services were cancelled, short-terminated or started from alternative stations. The railway authority said arrangements were being made to assist passengers affected by the diversions. Food packets, drinking water and ticket refund facilities were arranged, while help desks were set up at railway stations to provide information and support. NFR officials also said buses operated by the Assam State Transport Corporation and local vehicles were arranged at Namtiali to help passengers travel towards Sibsagar Town station.

From there, a special train service was planned to connect passengers with Dibrugarh and New Tinsukia. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Assam over the next two days. Authorities said eastern Assam districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, are expected to receive widespread rainfall activity.

The continuing rain has increased concerns over further flooding and infrastructure damage in vulnerable districts. Disaster management teams and local authorities are monitoring river levels and assisting affected communities. Railway officials have advised passengers to check the latest train status before travelling, as services may continue to face changes depending on weather conditions and the flood situation. The NFR said restoration work would begin once water levels recede and tracks are declared safe for operations.
