Assam CM Meets Union Minister To Boost Sports Infrastructure And Worker Welfare
Assam CM discusses sports infrastructure expansion and worker welfare with Union Minister in New Delhi.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday met Union Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi to discuss strengthening sports infrastructure in the state and enhancing welfare measures for workers. The meeting, held at the Union Minister’s official residence, lasted over an hour and focused on expanding Assam’s sporting ecosystem and improving opportunities for athletes.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma shared details on social media platform X, describing the discussion as aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s guiding principle of “Sewa First.” He expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for taking time on his birthday to engage in discussions on Assam’s development priorities, particularly in the areas of sports and labour welfare.
Sarma said the talks centred on building stronger sports infrastructure across Assam, creating better facilities for emerging athletes and ensuring an enabling environment for workers and labourers in the state. He also emphasised the need to strengthen mechanisms that support “Shramjeevis,” or working-class communities, as part of broader social and economic development efforts.

The Chief Minister further conveyed birthday wishes to Mansukh Mandaviya and sought continued support from the Centre to help Assam realise its ambition of becoming a major sports hub in the country. He reiterated that sustained cooperation with the Union government would be essential to scale up infrastructure and talent development initiatives across the state.
Assam has in recent years increased its focus on sports development through investments in modern infrastructure, hosting of national and international events, and expansion of grassroots training programmes. The state government has positioned sports as a key pillar of youth engagement and long-term growth strategy, aiming to identify and nurture talent from an early stage.
Officials noted that the latest meeting reflects ongoing efforts to align state and central priorities in strengthening India’s overall sporting ecosystem, with Assam seeking to play a larger role in shaping the country’s future in athletics and competitive sports.
