Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia Resigns Following Completion Of Government Tenure
Devajit Saikia resigned as Assam Advocate General following completion of the current government’s tenure.
Senior advocate Devajit Saikia on Thursday announced his resignation as the Advocate General of Assam following the completion of the tenure of the present state government. The resignation comes ahead of the swearing-in of the new BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the state, scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati.
In a statement shared on X, Saikia said he had submitted his resignation on Wednesday in line with constitutional convention and established legal practice after the conclusion of the current government’s term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He stated that the decision was taken to uphold the traditions associated with the constitutional office of Advocate General.
“Keeping and upholding the high tradition and constitutional practice, I have tendered my resignation yesterday from the Office of the Advocate General, Assam, upon completion of my tenure of nearly five years and consequent to the end of the present Government’s term,” Saikia said in his statement. He described his tenure as an “immense honour and privilege” and expressed gratitude to the state leadership, judiciary, and legal fraternity for their support during his time in office.

Saikia thanked the Chief Minister, members of the Council of Ministers, government officials, lawyers, and others associated with the state administration and judicial system for the confidence placed in him over the past several years. During his nearly five-year tenure, he represented the Assam government in several significant legal and constitutional matters before various courts, including cases involving governance, public policy, and state administration.
Apart from his role in Assam’s legal system, Saikia is also a prominent figure in Indian cricket administration. He currently serves as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and has been associated with cricket governance for several years. His dual role in both legal and sports administration has made him a well-recognised public figure in the state and at the national level.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that a new Advocate General is likely to be appointed after the formation of the new Council of Ministers in Assam. The appointment is expected to follow the swearing-in ceremony of the incoming government, which will formally begin its new term later this month.
