Argentina Helicopter Crash Leaves Seven Dead; Authorities Begin Investigation Into Incident

Seven people were killed after a firefighting helicopter crashed in Argentina’s western San Juan province on Wednesday, according to local authorities. The accident involved a Bell 412 aircraft that was conducting training operations before it was scheduled to assist firefighting efforts in a neighbouring province, where crews were battling ongoing wildfires. The helicopter crashed in the Ischigualasto natural park, a protected area known for its unique landscape and geological formations. Officials said the aircraft lost contact with its base at around 10:30 am local time (1330 GMT) on Wednesday, triggering an emergency response operation. Rescue teams were later deployed to the crash site, where all seven occupants were found dead.

San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego confirmed the deaths in a statement shared on X, expressing grief over the incident. "With profound sorrow, we received the news of the helicopter accident that occurred in our province, in which seven people sadly lost their lives," he wrote. The governor said the victims included firefighters, police officers and civil protection personnel who were involved in emergency response activities. The helicopter was reportedly preparing to support firefighting operations in a neighbouring province after several days of active fires.

Authorities said the aircraft had been engaged in training activities before the planned deployment. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched to determine whether technical failure, weather conditions or other factors contributed to the accident. Argentina’s emergency services said teams were working at the crash site and gathering information as part of the investigation. Officials have not released details about the identities of all victims, but the loss of firefighters and emergency personnel has drawn widespread mourning among local communities and government officials.

Argentina’s Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the crash. "I stand with each of the families and their fellow officers in this moment of profound grief," she wrote in a message shared on social media. Authorities have assured that support will be provided to the families and colleagues of the victims during the investigation. Local journalist Mauricio Davila, who had spoken with rescue teams at the crash site, described the scene as devastating. He said the helicopter had been severely damaged in the impact. Another journalist and friend of one of the victims, police officer German Videla, said he had spoken with Videla about an hour before the crash, making the incident particularly tragic for those who knew the victims.

Following the accident, the San Juan provincial government declared three days of mourning. During this period, national and provincial flags will be flown at half-mast in honour of the seven people who lost their lives. The crash has highlighted the risks faced by emergency personnel who operate in dangerous conditions while responding to natural disasters and protecting communities. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the helicopter crash, while officials and residents across San Juan mourn the loss of the personnel who died while preparing to support firefighting efforts.
