Amit Shah Says India Needs Modern Urban Planning And Real Estate Reform
Amit Shah calls for modern urban planning and skilled real estate leadership to boost India’s development.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stressed the need for modern urban planning and skilled real estate leadership to ensure the sustainable development of India’s cities, highlighting that inadequate planning in the past has significantly hindered urban growth. He made these remarks while addressing a public event in Ahmedabad on Sunday, where he underscored the importance of structured and forward-looking development models for rapidly expanding urban centres.
Shah said that many Indian cities have historically grown in an unplanned manner, with infrastructure and civic amenities often being added after settlements have already expanded. He noted that this approach has created long-term challenges, including congestion, pressure on resources, and uneven development across urban regions. According to him, addressing these issues requires a shift toward integrated planning that anticipates future needs rather than reacting to existing problems.
Emphasising the role of the real estate sector, the Home Minister said that developers and planners must work together to ensure cities are built with a long-term vision. He highlighted the importance of skilled leadership in real estate, arguing that modern urban development demands expertise in infrastructure design, environmental balance, and efficient land use.

Shah also pointed out that urbanisation in India is accelerating, making it essential to adopt global standards of planning and sustainability. He said that future cities must be designed to support economic growth while also ensuring livability, environmental protection, and adequate public facilities for citizens. He added that the government has already been working on infrastructure expansion and policy reforms to support this transformation.
The Home Minister further stated that initiatives in urban infrastructure and housing reflect a broader national vision aimed at creating well-planned, modern cities. He said that collaboration between policymakers, urban planners, and the private sector will be crucial in achieving this goal and in addressing the challenges posed by rapid urban expansion.
Reiterating his message, Shah called for a more scientific and coordinated approach to city development, saying that India’s urban future depends on stronger planning frameworks and professional expertise in the real estate sector.
