Air India Announces Significant Domestic Fare Hike From April 8

Air India hikes domestic fares due to rising fuel costs.

Air India announced a revision in its fare structure for domestic and international flights, effective from 9:01 am on April 8. The new pricing policy introduces a distance-based surcharge, replacing the previous standard-rate system, and is aimed at offsetting the sharp rise in jet fuel prices.

For domestic travelers, short-haul flights under 500 km will incur an additional ₹299 per sector, while longer routes exceeding 2,000 km will see surcharges of up to ₹899. The charges are applied per sector, meaning that passengers with stopovers will need to pay the fee for each leg of their journey.

International passengers will also face increased costs. Flights to Europe will carry a $205 surcharge per sector, while travelers to North America and Australia will see an additional $280. Routes to Southeast Asia and West Asia will have surcharges of $100 and $50, respectively.

The hike comes amid a global surge in fuel prices, with jet fuel costs rising to $195.19 per barrel at the end of March, nearly doubling from $99.40 the previous month. Refining margins, or “crack spreads,” have also jumped from $27.83 to $81.44 per barrel, intensifying operational costs for airlines. Air India noted that these increases significantly impact the expenses of long-haul international flights.

Industry experts emphasize that fuel constitutes the largest cost component for airlines, and Air India’s decision reflects broader pressures in the global aviation sector. The company indicated that further adjustments to surcharges may be necessary if fuel prices continue to escalate due to geopolitical tensions and energy market volatility.

The announcement coincides with the sudden departure of Campbell Wilson as CEO and MD of Air India, adding to the company’s operational challenges. Authorities and travelers are advised to account for these revised charges when planning domestic or international travel.
