AIADMK Releases 23 Candidates, Finalises NDA Seat Sharing Ahead Of Tamil Nadu Elections
AIADMK releases first 23 candidates, EPS to contest Edappadi; NDA allies’ seats finalised ahead of April 23 polls.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has signaled an assertive start to its campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by releasing its first list of 23 candidates. The move positions the party as a principal challenger to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in a contest widely viewed as a critical test for the leadership of Party General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS).
EPS will contest from his home constituency of Edappadi, highlighting the personal significance of the elections. The candidate list includes senior party leaders and core committee members, underscoring AIADMK’s strategy of leveraging experienced politicians to strengthen its electoral performance. Notable names include Deputy General Secretary P Munusamy from Veppanahalli, Treasurer Dindigul Srinivasan from Dindigul, senior leader Natham Viswanathan from Natham, SP Velumani from Thondamuthur, K Thangamani from Kumarapalayam, D Jayakumar from Royapuram, and C Vijayabaskar from Viralimalai. Former minister RB Udhayakumar will contest from Thirumangalam, reinforcing the party’s reliance on seasoned leadership.
In a politically sensitive decision, AIADMK has retained the Tirupparankundram seat, fielding sitting MLA Rajan Chellappa, amid speculation that the BJP might stake a claim in the constituency, which recently drew attention during the “deepam” row in Madurai. The party has nearly finalized its seat-sharing arrangement within the NDA alliance: the BJP is allotted 27 seats, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) led by TTV Dhinakaran gets 11, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) led by Anbumani Ramadoss receives one, Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) led by GK Vasan gets five, and Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) led by John Pandian is allocated one seat. Of the 234 seats in the state assembly, 62 have already been shared, leaving AIADMK with 172 seats under its control.

The election carries heightened stakes for EPS, whose leadership has faced challenges following three consecutive electoral defeats since the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. After breaking away from the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, AIADMK has now realigned with the saffron party. However, the alliance faces potential vote fragmentation: internal divisions in PMK, the independent candidacy of VK Sasikala, and shifts in the Thevar community vote could complicate AIADMK’s prospects, while the entry of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) adds an unpredictable factor, especially among younger voters.
AIADMK is framing its campaign around anti-incumbency against the DMK government, citing concerns over women’s safety, law and order, and unfulfilled promises—claims rejected by the ruling party. To bolster its appeal, AIADMK has unveiled a populist manifesto promising measures such as doubling monthly assistance for women to Rs. 2,000, providing free refrigerators, waiving student loans, supplying three free LPG cylinders annually, offering Rs. 25,000 subsidies for two-wheelers to five lakh people, and housing support for the homeless poor.
With candidate lists being announced and alliances in place, Tamil Nadu is set for a high-voltage electoral contest. The ruling DMK is expected to release its candidate list shortly. Assembly polls are scheduled for April 23, with vote counting and results declaration set for May 4, shaping up as a decisive political moment for the state.
