Ahmedabad Enforces Zero Tolerance: Task Force Clears Streets of Stray Cattle

Joint AMC-police task force intensifies crackdown on stray cattle, declaring multiple wards No Cattle Zones and impounding animals to enhance public safety and traffic flow.

Ahmedabad civic authorities have launched a strict “zero tolerance” drive to address the long-standing issue of stray cattle on city roads, with a special task force stepping up enforcement to reclaim streets and improve public safety. The intensified action follows repeated complaints about traffic disruptions and accidents caused by unattended cattle in busy residential and commercial areas.

Officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said the task force has been instructed to take firm action against cattle owners who allow animals to roam freely on public roads. The drive includes impounding stray cattle, issuing fines, and initiating legal action against repeat offenders, signalling a tougher stance compared to earlier, sporadic enforcement efforts.

According to civic officials, the presence of cattle on roads has become a major safety concern, particularly during peak traffic hours. Several incidents involving two-wheelers and pedestrians have been linked to stray animals, prompting authorities to prioritise the issue as part of broader traffic and urban management reforms.

The AMC has also warned that dairy owners operating illegally within city limits will face strict penalties. Officials said inspections are being carried out to identify unauthorised cattle sheds, and violators may face closure, seizure of animals, and prosecution under municipal laws. The administration maintains that responsibility for cattle safety and control rests squarely with owners.

Residents have largely welcomed the move, saying unchecked cattle movement has been a persistent civic problem. However, some cattle owners have expressed concern over the sudden tightening of enforcement, urging the authorities to provide designated shelters and clearer rehabilitation mechanisms for seized animals.

Civic authorities have reiterated that the “zero tolerance” approach will continue until roads are free of stray cattle. The administration has appealed to citizens to cooperate by reporting violations, stressing that sustained enforcement is essential to ensure safer roads, smoother traffic flow, and improved urban living conditions in Ahmedabad.
