Agartala Flooded: River Level Rises, Evacuation Underway In Several Areas

Rising river levels flood Agartala as evacuations continue.

Several low-lying areas of Agartala were flooded after the Haora River crossed the danger level following heavy overnight rainfall, prompting the administration to intensify rescue and relief operations. Floodwaters entered homes in the Chandrapur-Baldakhal area late Saturday night as the river level rose sharply. Several residents were forced to leave their homes with essential belongings.

Jirania Sub-Divisional Magistrate Animesh Dhar said the sudden rainfall caused the river to rise rapidly, leading to water entering residential areas. Among those affected were a three-day-old baby, a disabled person and a stroke patient from the Baldakhal area. Rescue teams continued to assist people stranded in inundated locations as authorities worked to move vulnerable residents to safer areas.

Four relief shelters have been opened across the Jirania subdivision at Mandai, Old Agartala, Chandrapur and Ranirbazar. Several affected residents have already moved to shelters in Mandai and Old Agartala, while the other centres had not reported permanent occupancy at the time of reporting. The administration has also arranged food, milk for children and other essential supplies for families affected by the flooding.

Civil Defence personnel, scouts, teams from the Tripura State Rifles 10th and 2nd Battalions, and the State Disaster Response Force have been deployed for rescue operations. Five boats are currently being used, with another kept on standby. Officials said the exact number of people rescued could not immediately be confirmed because residents were continuing to move between affected areas.

Dhar said there were no reports of major casualties or extensive damage so far, while a detailed assessment will be carried out after the floodwaters recede. Although rainfall had stopped and weather conditions improved, the river level remained around the danger mark. The administration has therefore kept emergency teams on alert and will continue rescue and relief work until water levels begin to fall and the situation returns to normal.
