5-Year-Old Chinese Girl Hospitalised After Accidentally Swallowing 50-Gram Gold Bar

A five-year-old girl in northern China was hospitalised in critical condition after accidentally swallowing a 50-gram gold bar while playing at home. The child was admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital on August 16 after the unusual incident, with doctors concerned that the dense metal object could cause serious injuries inside her digestive tract. The case required emergency medical intervention because of the size, weight and hardness of the object.

According to the available report, the gold bar measured around four centimetres in length and remained lodged in the girl's stomach. An X-ray examination revealed the foreign object after the child was brought to the hospital. Doctors faced the risk that the bar could damage the stomach lining or other parts of the digestive tract because of its considerable weight and rigid structure. If the object had remained in place for an extended period, it could potentially have caused severe internal bleeding or perforation.

The girl reportedly swallowed the gold bar accidentally while playing at home. Her family initially took her to several smaller medical clinics after discovering what had happened, but those facilities did not have the equipment required to perform an emergency endoscopic procedure to remove a foreign object from the digestive system. The family subsequently brought the child to the Beijing Children's Hospital, where doctors assessed her condition and began treatment.

Medical staff were particularly concerned because gold is highly dense and a 50-gram bar can exert significant pressure despite its relatively small dimensions.
