2 Arrested In Chandigarh Chemist's Murder Case Following Dramatic Escape Attempt
Two suspects caught after failed bid to evade police.
The Chandigarh Police has solved the murder of a cashier at a prominent medical store in the city, arresting two alleged shooters after an extensive manhunt that ended with a dramatic escape attempt and police encounter. The accused, identified as Sunny Mehra and Aryan Sharma, were arrested from Jammu several days after the fatal shooting that took place on June 13 in Sector 11, one of Chandigarh’s busiest commercial areas. Authorities said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed immediately after the incident to expedite the investigation.
According to Inspector General of Police Pushpendra Kumar, investigators traced the movements of the suspects after they fled Chandigarh following the crime. Police said the accused first travelled to Delhi by bus and later boarded a train to Jammu in an effort to evade arrest. The SIT tracked their route through technical surveillance and other investigative methods before apprehending both men in Jammu. Officials described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in the high-profile case.
Police said the situation took a dramatic turn while the accused were being transported back to Chandigarh. During the journey, the vehicle carrying the suspects reportedly met with an accident. Investigators alleged that the duo took advantage of the situation by snatching a weapon and attempting to escape custody. This led to an exchange of fire between the accused and police personnel. Authorities stated that the suspects fired two rounds, prompting police to retaliate with four rounds, resulting in injuries to both accused in their legs.

The injured suspects were subsequently admitted to a hospital, where they are undergoing treatment under police supervision. Preliminary findings suggest that Sunny Mehra was the individual who fired the fatal shot that killed the cashier, identified as Janaki Dass. Investigators also confirmed that neither of the arrested accused has any known prior criminal record. Meanwhile, police are examining audio recordings containing alleged threat messages that may be connected to the murder and could provide further leads in the case.
The killing occurred in broad daylight at around 2:30 pm on June 13, sending shockwaves through the city. CCTV footage captured two men entering the medical store and opening fire on Janaki Dass, a resident of Rohru in Himachal Pradesh. Police said three attackers had arrived at the scene on a motorcycle, with one accomplice waiting outside while the two shooters entered the shop. Following the attack, all three fled the area on the motorcycle.
Investigators believe the case is not yet fully resolved, as one more accused remains absconding. Police teams are continuing efforts to identify his whereabouts and secure his arrest. Authorities have assured that all aspects of the crime, including the motive behind the killing and the alleged threat messages, are being thoroughly examined. Further investigation is ongoing, and officials expect additional developments as the probe progresses.
