Zubeen Garg Family Seeks Special Court From PM Modi For Speedy Trial
Zubeen Garg’s family writes to PM Modi seeking special court and speedy trial in singer’s death case.
The family of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking the constitution of a special court in India for a speedy trial in the case related to the music icon’s untimely death. Garg, 52, passed away while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
The letter, signed by Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg, sister Palmee Borthakur, and uncle Manoj Borthakur, highlighted the need for focused adjudication to maintain public confidence and prevent procedural delays. The family stressed that millions of fans and well-wishers are awaiting clarity and lawful action in the case.
Authorities in Singapore initiated proceedings suo motu following Garg’s death, which was subsequently reported to the CID of Assam Police. The Assam government then constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which filed a chargesheet last month against four of the seven accused in the case, including murder charges.

The family’s letter emphasized their continuous engagement with authorities in both India and Singapore, stating that no efforts to uncover the truth have been neglected. A detailed statement has also been placed before the coroner’s court in Singapore to clarify the sequence of events, emergency response, and safety measures surrounding Garg’s death.
To expedite the trial, the family requested the central government to appoint additional public prosecutors if required to support the existing five-member team designated by Assam authorities. They emphasized that the proceedings must be conducted with the highest professional competence to ensure justice is served swiftly.
Additionally, the letter called for fast-tracking the judicial process through administrative and legal measures and requested active diplomatic and legal coordination with Singapore. The family hopes such interventions will ensure that justice is neither delayed nor compromised due to procedural or cross-border complexities.
