Young EMT Simone Kelly Wins Hearts for Narcan Rescue of Overdose Victim at Knicks Parade
EMT Simone Kelly rescues overdose victim at New York Knicks parade with Narcan.
A 24-year-old Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) has been widely praised on social media after rescuing a New York Knicks fan who reportedly collapsed from a suspected overdose during Thursday's victory parade. Simone Kelly, a member of the South Orange Volunteer Rescue Squad in New Jersey, quickly intervened after noticing a man lying unresponsive on the roof of a subway station entrance amid the celebrations.
According to reports, Simone Kelly immediately recognised signs of a possible overdose and climbed onto the structure to reach the man. A video of the rescue, which has since gone viral on Instagram, shows Simone Kelly assessing the man's condition, rubbing his chest to check for responsiveness and preparing to administer emergency treatment while onlookers watched from below.
Explaining her actions, Simone Kelly said the man displayed classic symptoms associated with an opioid overdose, including unresponsiveness, reduced breathing and pinpoint pupils. After someone in the crowd tossed her a Narcan kit, she administered the life-saving nasal spray, which is commonly used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, helping the man regain consciousness.
The rescue took an unexpected turn after the man woke up and allegedly made repeated attempts to kiss Simone Kelly. She initially turned her face away before eventually pushing him back when he continued. Reflecting on the incident, Simone Kelly said such situations are unfortunately familiar in her profession and that she has often had to reject unwanted physical contact or inappropriate behaviour while providing emergency medical care.
The dramatic rescue has drawn widespread admiration online, with many social media users praising Simone Kelly for her quick thinking, professionalism and courage in responding to a life-threatening emergency in the middle of a crowded public event. The viral video has highlighted the critical role played by trained first responders and the importance of timely intervention during overdose incidents.
While the footage has been shared extensively across social media platforms, viewers have been advised that it may be distressing due to the nature of the medical emergency. The incident has also sparked discussions about overdose awareness, the availability of Narcan and the challenges emergency medical personnel face while carrying out their duties under unpredictable circumstances.
