Yogi Pays Tribute to G.B. Pant on 139th Birth Anniversary

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant on his 139th birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to India’s freedom struggle, governance, land reforms and efforts to address linguistic tensions after Independence. Adityanath and State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna attended a programme at Lok Bhavan in Lucknow, where floral tributes were offered to Pant, the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Adityanath described Pant as a distinguished lawyer and freedom fighter who played an important role in the national movement. He recalled Pant’s involvement in the legal defence of revolutionaries prosecuted by the British government following the 1925 Kakori train action. According to the Chief Minister, Pant actively participated in the freedom struggle and was among the prominent leaders who defended those accused in the case.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Pant’s contribution to public administration and social and economic development. He said Pant worked for the economic advancement and interests of every section of society, while also pointing to the importance of the land reform model presented during his political career. Adityanath said Pant’s work had a lasting significance in shaping governance and addressing social and economic concerns.

Adityanath further said Pant played an important role in establishing Hindi as an official language. He recalled the former Chief Minister’s contribution to resolving linguistic tensions that emerged in the period following Independence. According to Adityanath, Pant’s interventions reflected an effort to address differences while contributing to the development of the country’s administrative and linguistic framework.

The Chief Minister paid tribute to Pant on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government and the people of the State. He described Pant as a leader whose contributions extended beyond the freedom movement to governance and reforms. Pant served as the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and later held important responsibilities at the national level.

The birth anniversary programme in Lucknow was attended by senior State leaders, including Finance Minister Suresh Khanna. Adityanath said Pant’s life and public service continued to provide an important reference point for the State. The tribute focused on his role as a freedom fighter, administrator, advocate for social and economic advancement, and contributor to land reforms and the resolution of linguistic issues after Independence.
