Yogi Adityanath Calls Delhi a Gas Chamber While Praising UP's Clean Air

Yogi Adityanath compares Delhi's air to a 'gas chamber' and praises UP's clean environment amid development.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday likened the air quality in Delhi to a “gas chamber,” citing the severe pollution levels that make breathing difficult for residents. Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated Block Development Officer’s office in Jungle Kauria, Gorakhpur, he contrasted the capital’s environmental challenges with the comparatively clean air in his state.

Adityanath emphasized that environmental degradation is among the most pressing global challenges today. He explained that pollution adversely affects health, particularly the lungs, and stressed that maintaining a clean environment is crucial for public well-being. “If our supply of oxygen is compromised, the entire body suffers,” he noted during the event.

Turning his focus to Delhi, the Chief Minister described the situation as “dire,” with residents experiencing burning sensations in the eyes and doctors advising vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and asthma patients, to remain indoors. “What kind of life is this?” he questioned, highlighting the urgency of addressing urban pollution.

He contrasted this with conditions in Uttar Pradesh, asserting that people in the state are “fortunate” to enjoy development without a suffocating environment. Adityanath stressed that protecting natural resources and reducing environmental harm are essential to prevent similar crises elsewhere.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 211 as of 9 am on Saturday, placing it in the “poor” category. The AQI scale categorizes readings between 201 and 300 as poor, indicating significant health risks from air pollution.

The Chief Minister’s remarks underline the growing concern over air quality in India’s major urban centers and the importance of balancing development with environmental sustainability. Officials and policymakers are being urged to prioritize clean air initiatives to safeguard public health.
