Yathindra Siddaramaiah takes charge as Karnataka Legislative Council Leader.

Karnataka Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah was appointed Leader of the House in the Legislative Council on Thursday as the Monsoon Session of the Karnataka Legislature began. Pro-tem Chairman Puttanna announced the appointment soon after the proceedings commenced and welcomed Yathindra Siddaramaiah to the new responsibility.

Addressing the Council, Yathindra said this was his first time serving as a minister as well as holding the position of Leader of the House. Acknowledging his limited experience in the role, he sought cooperation and guidance from members of both the ruling party and the Opposition during the session.

“I have been appointed as a minister and as the Leader of the House for the first time. Since I have limited experience, I request both the ruling and Opposition members to guide me and correct me if I make any mistakes,” Yathindra said. Congress members welcomed his appointment by thumping their desks as he appealed to members across the political spectrum to cooperate during the proceedings.

Yathindra, the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee member Siddaramaiah, represented the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2018 to 2023. He is currently a member of the Legislative Council and played an important role during the 2023 Assembly elections in ensuring his father’s victory from Varuna in Mysuru district.

The Legislative Council proceedings began as part of the Monsoon Session, with several issues expected to be taken up for discussion. Before the session, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara congratulated Pro-tem Speaker T.B. Jayachandra at Vidhana Soudha. Parameshwara later met Shivakumar at his office, while Shivakumar bowed at the Assembly entrance and paid his respects at the Chief Minister’s chair before attending the first session after becoming Chief Minister.

The Assembly also held condolence proceedings for former legislators and public figures who recently passed away. BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra recalled the contributions of former minister Ramachandra Gowda, former Kolar MLA K.R. Srinivas and other legislators to public life. He also paid tribute to veteran singers S. Janaki and Asha Bhosle, saying their voices would continue to be remembered, and recalled Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, as a source of strength to her family.
