Yamuna Floods Paralyze Delhi Roads, Commuters Turn to Metro Amid Chaos

Floodwaters swamp key Delhi routes like Ring Road and Kalindi Kunj, causing hours-long jams and diversions.

Yamuna floodwaters unleashed havoc on Delhi's roads on Thursday, turning major routes like Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and Kalindi Kunj into virtual rivers. Morning rush hour became a nightmare as vehicles crawled through inundated stretches, with some commuters stuck for hours.

Social media lit up with frustration as drivers reported taking hours to cover mere kilometres. Many abandoned their cars, opting for the Delhi Metro to reach workplaces. "Two kilometres took me over an hour!" one user posted on X, while videos showed water gushing onto Ring Road from Majnu Ka Tila to Nigam Bodh Ghat.

Delhi Traffic Police scrambled to manage the chaos, reporting heavy congestion near the Yamuna. "Floodwater has submerged key stretches, forcing diversions," an official said. Commuters heading from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Rajghat were directed to use Signature Bridge, Pusta Road, and Raja Ram Kohli Marg to bypass the mess.

The Public Works Department downplayed the flooding, blaming poor seepage rather than fresh Yamuna water. "Rainwater is pooling due to blocked outlets," a PWD official claimed. But commuters weren’t convinced, with footage showing Yamuna water spilling onto roads.

The ripple effect hit nearby areas hard, with tailbacks clogging routes to Wazirabad, ISBT, Sarai Kale Khan, and Ashram. One motorist near Kashmere Gate recounted, "I was stuck for two hours with no clear diversion. I finally parked and hopped on the metro."

In Kalindi Kunj, waterlogging choked one lane, forcing all traffic into a single file, worsening delays. Traffic police urged commuters to avoid flooded zones and rely on the metro, which ran smoothly despite the chaos.

For real-time updates, authorities advised following Delhi Traffic Police’s social media. "Skip the flooded roads and cooperate with officers on the ground," a police spokesperson said. With more rain possible, Delhiites brace for further disruptions.
