Xi Jinping Gives Donald Trump Rare Tour Of China’s Guarded Political Compound

Xi Jinping offered Trump rare access to China’s tightly guarded political complex.

Xi Jinping gave US President Donald Trump a rare tour of Zhongnanhai during Trump’s recent visit to China, highlighting the significance Beijing attached to the diplomatic engagement between the two leaders. The highly secured compound serves as the political centre of China’s Communist Party leadership and is seldom opened to foreign dignitaries.

During the visit, Xi accompanied Trump through Zhongnanhai’s landscaped gardens, where the two leaders reportedly stopped to admire blooming roses before sitting down for tea and lunch discussions. Trump asked whether other world leaders were frequently received at the compound, prompting Xi to reply that such visits were “extremely rare.” Xi noted that even Russian President Vladimir Putin had been among the limited number of foreign leaders invited inside.

Zhongnanhai, located beside Beijing’s historic Forbidden City, functions as both the workplace and residence of China’s senior leadership. Named after two lakes within the complex, the compound has long been associated with the highest levels of political authority in China and is often compared to the White House in the United States or the Kremlin in Russia.

The compound remains one of the most secretive locations in China, protected by extensive security arrangements overseen by a specialised military unit responsible for safeguarding the country’s top leadership. Public access is strictly prohibited, while online imagery and mapping of the area are heavily restricted, contributing to its aura of secrecy and political symbolism.

Foreign leaders are rarely hosted within Zhongnanhai because China traditionally reserves the compound for internal state affairs and top-level Communist Party activities. Diplomatic meetings with visiting heads of state are more commonly held at venues such as the Great Hall of the People or official state guesthouses. Xi’s decision to receive Trump there was therefore widely interpreted as a gesture aimed at signalling trust and strategic importance in bilateral relations.

The visit also underscored the continued importance both countries place on high-level diplomatic engagement despite persistent tensions over trade, technology, Taiwan, and geopolitical competition. Symbolic gestures during state visits often carry significant weight in Chinese political culture, where protocol and access are closely tied to perceptions of status, trust, and strategic partnership.
