World’s Largest Corn Maze Returns in California, Promises Fun in Getting Lost

California’s 40-acre corn maze reopens for fall adventure seekers.

Dixon, California, is once again home to fall’s most adventurous tradition as Cool Patch Pumpkins reopens its massive corn maze along Interstate 80 between Sacramento and San Francisco. Once crowned the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of World Records, the sprawling 40-acre maze kicks off its seasonal run just in time for Halloween.

Owner Taylor Cooley says part of the attraction is the joy of being disoriented in a world dominated by technology and constant direction. “It is confusing. It's exciting, and in a world of GPS and constant signage, you always know where you are, where you're going. When you’re in the corn, everything looks the same until you pop up on a bridge and realize you’re somewhere completely different,” Cooley explained.

The intricate labyrinth, which typically takes at least 45 minutes to conquer, is annually redesigned with elaborate aerial patterns. This year, the theme celebrates farmers, while previous years have honored first responders and veterans through massive designs visible from above. To add to the challenge and fun, the maze includes five bridges, giving visitors a chance to peek over the endless rows of corn before diving back in.

Cool Patch Pumpkins has a long history of drawing record-breaking crowds since first earning recognition in 2007 and again in 2014 as the world’s largest corn maze. Families and maze enthusiasts from across the country make the trip to test their sense of direction. On a recent visit, guests like Ryan Moore from Hawaii laughed about being happily lost, while others, like Shelly Tang from Redwood City, California, admitted to relying on their children to guide them out.

Beyond the main attraction, the farm also offers fall-themed family fun, including a corn bath filled with nearly 70 kilograms of dried corn for toddlers. With rival mazes springing up in Canada, Minnesota, and Illinois, Cool Patch continues to defend its legacy as a must-visit autumn adventure — combining creativity, tradition, and a touch of playful confusion.
