Workers Trapped in Pune Soil Collapse!

Soil collapse traps three labourers in Pune drainage excavation

A catastrophic soil collapse during drainage line excavation outside Nanded City township on Sinhgad Road, Pune, trapped three labourers under a mound of debris on Monday evening, officials confirmed. The incident, occurring around 6 PM, saw one worker successfully rescued, while intensive efforts continue to free the two others still buried, raising alarms about safety protocols at infrastructure sites.

According to the Pune Fire Brigade, the mishap occurred when a trench section caved in unexpectedly during excavation work overseen by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Emergency response teams, including the PMRDA Fire Brigade and Pune District Disaster Response Force (PDRF), swiftly mobilized to the site, cordoning off the area to facilitate rescue operations. The rescued labourer, whose identity remains undisclosed, received immediate oxygen and medical attention and is reported stable.

Specialized equipment, including earthmovers, is being deployed to carefully clear the debris, with officials prioritizing the safety of the trapped workers. “The operation is ongoing with utmost urgency to locate and extricate the remaining two labourers,” a PMRDA official stated. The collapse has spotlighted recurring safety lapses in construction projects, with similar incidents reported in Pune, such as a 2022 fatality at Nanded City and a 2023 well collapse in Indapur trapping four workers.

Preliminary investigations suggest loose soil, possibly destabilized by recent rains, contributed to the collapse. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMRDA are now under scrutiny, with calls for a probe into whether adequate safety measures, such as trench shoring, were implemented. Local residents and activists have expressed outrage, citing negligence by contractors as a recurring issue in Maharashtra’s infrastructure projects.

This incident follows a string of similar accidents, including a June 2025 tragedy in Rajasthan, where four labourers died in a pipeline excavation collapse. As rescue efforts continue, authorities have promised a thorough investigation to determine the cause and prevent future mishaps, amid growing demands for stricter safety regulations.
