Wooden Bridge Collapse Sweeps Four Into River in Sitapur, All Saved

Four people swept away in UP's Sitapur river after wooden bridge collapse during Makar Sankranti fair; all rescued.

A major accident was narrowly averted in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district after a makeshift wooden bridge over the Sarayan River collapsed on Wednesday evening, sweeping four people into the river. The incident occurred near Harraiya Dham under the Mirchaudi Gram Panchayat as villagers were returning from a Makar Sankranti fair.

According to Machhrehta police station SHO Prabhat Gupta, the wooden bridge serves as a vital connection between several villages, including Baruha Nevada, Gangapur, Aladadpur, and Benora. It is also a key route linking the area to the Khairabad police station jurisdiction and the national highway.

Gupta said the bridge gave way suddenly while villagers were crossing it after attending the fair, triggering panic among those present. Several people fell into the river and were swept away by the current, prompting immediate rescue efforts by locals at the site.

A police team, including the in-charge of the Surajpur outpost, rushed to the scene and assisted villagers in the rescue operation. Eyewitnesses Kewat Naresh and Sobran, who were present at the ghat, confirmed that four people were pulled out of the river safely with collective efforts.

Authorities said all four victims were rescued without serious injuries. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of temporary bridges used during festive gatherings, and officials are expected to assess the condition of such structures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
