Women's Day Controversy: PM Modi Says TMC Insulted President Murmu, Trinamool Hits Back
PM Modi criticised TMC over President Murmu's Bengal visit amid Mamata's absence and poor arrangements.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharply criticised the Trinamool Congress on Sunday, accusing the party of insulting President Droupadi Murmu on International Women’s Day and attempting to sabotage a tribal welfare programme. Speaking at an event in Burari, Delhi, Modi said the incident was “an insult to the traditions of democracy” and warned that the party “will be left in tatters".
“Today, when the country is celebrating Women’s Day, the Trinamool Congress insulted the country’s president," Modi said. “They attempted to sabotage a major programme for tribal people. No matter how great an arrogant person is, he or she is destroyed.” He emphasised that the people of West Bengal would not forgive the affront to the tribal woman president.
The controversy erupted after President Murmu visited north Bengal for a tribal event and expressed dissatisfaction over the arrangements and the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Murmu noted that the state government had not ensured her expected protocol and claimed that tribal participation appeared limited. Modi highlighted these comments as “shameful and unprecedented", sharing the video on social media.

The West Bengal chief minister defended her government, stating that the state was not responsible for the programme and that organisers had managed the event. Mamata Banerjee also pointed to multiple welfare schemes, including the Lakshmir Bhandar monthly financial assistance for women, Sikshashree Scholarships, and tribal pensions under the Jai Johar project, which she said benefited Adivasi communities across Bengal.
During the Women’s Day function, tribals took centre stage, with Banerjee seen dancing alongside them. The chief minister reiterated her respect for the president's office while asserting that the state government had no role in the alleged mismanagement. “There was an allegation regarding washrooms. I cross-checked. It was the responsibility of organisers… Don’t blame us,” she said.
The Trinamool Congress also accused the BJP of politicising the president's private visit ahead of upcoming elections. The party stated that the president's perception of tribal welfare was “misinformed” and outlined measurable interventions that have supported dignity, opportunity, and development for tribal communities in the state.
