Women Officers Begin Military Careers With Permanent Commission In Landmark Move
Women officers receive permanent commission from first day.
For the first time in India's military history, women officers have been granted permanent commissions from the very beginning of their careers after joining the Indian Army and Indian Air Force through the National Defence Academy (NDA). The milestone marks a significant shift in the armed forces, where the NDA had remained an exclusively male institution for more than seven decades.
The achievement was marked by the commissioning of nine women officers as Lieutenants at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun and five women officers as Flying Officers at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal. Their induction into active service represents the successful completion of a training journey that began after women were allowed entry into the NDA.
The development follows a landmark 2021 Supreme Court decision that directed the opening of the NDA to women, paving the way for their participation in one of the country's most prestigious military training institutions. The ruling was widely regarded as a major step toward expanding opportunities for women in the armed forces.

Until now, women officers in the Army and Air Force primarily entered service through the Short Service Commission (SSC) route. Under that system, officers became eligible to seek permanent commission only after serving for several years and meeting specified criteria. The NDA pathway, however, grants permanent commission from the outset, placing officers on a career track similar to their male counterparts.
The commissioning of these 14 officers therefore marks a historic first for both services. They are the inaugural batch of women to join the Army and Air Force through the NDA and receive permanent commission from day one of their service, reflecting the evolving role of women in India's defence establishment.
Military observers have described the development as a landmark moment in the ongoing effort to enhance gender inclusion within the armed forces. The entry of women through the NDA is expected to create new opportunities for future generations and further strengthen diversity in military leadership.
