Woman Jumps into Chenab River in Doda, Search Operation Underway

A young woman in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir reportedly jumped into the Chenab river after telling people near a bridge that she had decided to end her life. The woman, identified as Payal Devi, daughter of Krishan Lal, was returning home after attending a fair when the incident occurred. Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and local residents later began a search operation in the river, but she remained untraced. The incident took place near the Prem Nagar bridge and drew the attention of people in the area, who attempted to persuade her not to take the step.

According to the information available, Payal had been travelling on a motorcycle with a known person from her village while returning from the fair. During the journey, her dupatta reportedly became caught in the motorcycle. The rider stopped the vehicle to free the dupatta, after which Payal moved towards the edge of the Prem Nagar bridge. People present at the location noticed her actions and tried to intervene. She reportedly told those around her that she intended to end her life, prompting attempts by people at the bridge to reason with her and prevent her from jumping.

The man accompanying Payal also contacted her father after realising the seriousness of the situation. Her father was informed about what was happening and subsequently spoke to her over the phone. During the conversation, Payal reportedly told him that it was her life and that she had decided to end it. She then said, "Bye Bye Papa," before jumping from the bridge into the Chenab river. The incident left witnesses and her family distressed, while efforts were immediately made to locate her in the river.

Following the incident, police teams and SDRF personnel reached the area and began a search operation in the Chenab. Local residents also joined the effort to help locate the woman. The river's conditions have made the search challenging, with teams checking the surrounding stretches of the waterway and nearby areas. Authorities have continued efforts to trace Payal, but her body had not been recovered at the time of the report.

The incident has also highlighted the difficulties faced by rescuers during searches in fast-flowing rivers and other challenging terrain in the region. Such operations often require specialised equipment and coordinated efforts between disaster-response personnel, police and local communities. In this case, the search continued after the woman disappeared into the river, with authorities working to establish her whereabouts and provide information to her family.

The circumstances surrounding Payal's decision remain unclear, and authorities have not indicated a confirmed reason for the incident. The sequence of events began with the motorcycle stopping after her dupatta became caught and ended with her jumping from the bridge despite efforts by people nearby to stop her.
