Woman From Sudan Admitted To Kottayam Medical College With Suspected Ebola Symptoms
Sudan returnee admitted amid suspected Ebola concerns.
A 54-year-old woman who recently returned from South Sudan has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam after developing symptoms that prompted health authorities to investigate a possible Ebola infection. Officials said the woman, a native of Valavoor in Pala, was shifted to the government facility on Thursday for further evaluation and monitoring.
The woman initially sought treatment at a private hospital in Pala on Wednesday after experiencing fever. Given her recent travel history and the nature of the symptoms, health department officials decided to transfer her to the Medical College Hospital, where she has been placed in a special isolation ward as a precautionary measure.
Hospital authorities said the patient currently has a fever but does not exhibit other symptoms commonly associated with Ebola. Medical teams are closely monitoring her condition, and a dedicated group of healthcare professionals has been assigned to oversee her treatment and observation while awaiting laboratory results.

Health officials emphasised that no confirmation of Ebola infection has been made so far. A swab sample collected from the patient has been sent to a laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram for testing, and authorities said a definitive diagnosis would be possible only after the results are received. A medical board is also expected to be constituted to determine the next course of treatment based on the findings.
Ebola is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever caused by the Ebola virus and is known for its high fatality rate in some outbreaks. The disease spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, vomiting and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
The incubation period for Ebola ranges from two to 21 days, and public health authorities generally monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus for up to three weeks. Officials in Kerala said all necessary precautionary measures have been put in place while the patient's condition continues to be assessed and test results are awaited.
