Winner Without a Majority: Can Vijay Stitch the Numbers After 108-Seat Victory?
TVK wins big but lacks clear majority government path
Actor-turned-politician Vijay has made a striking electoral debut, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest force in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by winning 107 seats in the 234-member House. However, despite the strong performance, the party remains short of the 118-seat majority mark, raising questions over whether it can successfully form a government.
The election outcome places TVK in a pivotal position in state politics, with the possibility of a hung assembly now shaping post-poll negotiations. As the single largest party, TVK is expected to be invited by the Governor to explore government formation, even if it initially leads a minority administration. The party’s immediate challenge lies in securing additional support to cross the halfway mark.
Within political circles, attention is now focused on potential allies who could bridge the gap. Reports suggest that smaller parties, including some currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led bloc, may play a decisive role. These include the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), all of whom together hold a limited but potentially influential number of seats.

The possibility of external support is not new to Tamil Nadu politics. Party strategists have drawn parallels with earlier minority governments that survived with conditional backing from smaller allies. However, any realignment would depend on complex negotiations, particularly as pre-poll alliances and ideological positions may limit flexibility among established parties.
Another potential, though uncertain, route involves the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which holds a handful of seats. However, a direct understanding with the AIADMK appears unlikely due to its alignment with the BJP, which TVK has previously positioned itself against. These constraints make the post-election arithmetic particularly delicate.
Despite the uncertainty, TVK leaders have expressed confidence in forming the government. Party candidate Rhevanth Charan said there was “no fear of instability” and indicated that the leadership would decide on any alliance-related discussions. With Vijay also winning from two constituencies and the party making strong gains in Chennai, TVK’s debut has reshaped the political landscape, even as the final equation for government formation remains unresolved.
