Wife of Moshi Garbage Depot Mishap Victim Dies by Suicide in Pune

A 23-year-old woman whose husband died in the Moshi garbage depot mishap last month was suspected to have died by suicide at her residence in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Wednesday evening. The woman, identified as Sonali Gaikwad, lived in Sanjay Gandhi Nagar in Moshi. Her death came about a month after her husband, Nagesh Gaikwad, 26, was among nine workers who died in the collapse of a waste-to-energy plant at the Moshi garbage depot on July 8.

According to police, information about Sonali’s death was received at around 7 pm on Wednesday, following which a team was immediately sent to her residence. She was found at the house and was subsequently taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital for a postmortem examination. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding her death and are awaiting further findings from the investigation and postmortem process.

Sonali’s husband, Nagesh, was among the workers killed when the waste-to-energy plant at the Moshi garbage depot collapsed on July 8. The incident had resulted in the deaths of nine people and drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding the facility. Sonali’s death has now added another tragedy to a family that had lost a member in the industrial mishap just weeks earlier.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Yadav said that no suicide note had been recovered from the residence. Police have not publicly established a reason for Sonali’s suspected suicide and are investigating the circumstances that preceded her death. Officials are expected to examine available evidence and information from people who may have been in contact with her before the incident.

As per procedure, police registered an accidental death report at the Bhosari MIDC police station. Such a report allows authorities to formally investigate an unexplained or suspected suicide death and establish the circumstances surrounding it. Police are continuing their inquiry, and the postmortem examination is also expected to form part of the investigation into the case.

The death occurred roughly a month after the Moshi garbage depot tragedy that claimed Sonali’s husband and eight other lives. While the police investigation into her death is ongoing, authorities have not indicated any confirmed link between the earlier workplace accident and her suspected suicide. Further details are expected to emerge as investigators establish the sequence of events and examine the available evidence.
