Widow of Slain Indian Denied Fair Compensation
Jharkhand family fights for justice after Niger attack.
Yashoda Devi, 32, is battling for adequate compensation and a Rs 40 lakh insurance claim after her husband, Ganesh Karmali, 39, was killed in a terrorist attack in Niger’s Dosso region on July 15. Karmali, a foreman with Transrail Lighting Limited, died in a police-terrorist crossfire, leaving Devi and their three children to care for two elderly parents in Jharkhand’s Gomia block.
The company paid only Rs 10 lakh, which Devi deems insufficient for the family’s sole breadwinner. “How can we survive on this?” asked Devi, who fell ill when Karmali’s body arrived home on Sunday. Their daughter, Sapna Kumari, 17, alleged disparity, noting a Uttar Pradesh victim’s family received Rs 27 lakh. When questioned, company officials cited Karmali’s position but offered no further explanation.
Sapna claimed her father had Rs 40 lakh insurance coverage, but without papers, the family has received nothing. Bokaro’s labour superintendent, Ranji Kumar, confirmed a Rs 50 lakh compensation request was sent to the company, adding that the state government will provide Rs 5 lakh under the International Migrant Workers’ Security Scheme.
Kumar noted the family could approach the labour court for the insurance claim if documents are provided, but the family currently lacks the paperwork, leaving them in financial distress.
