Why Is Government Seeking Answers From Meta, X And Telegram Over Deepfakes?

Government reviews platform policies on deepfake control.

The Union government will continue discussions with Meta over content moderation practices, with the next phase of talks expected to focus on the technical functioning of the company's recommendation algorithms and systems used to identify and remove harmful content. The engagement comes amid increased government scrutiny of major digital platforms over concerns related to deepfakes, child sexual abuse material and accountability of social media companies operating in India.

According to officials familiar with the matter, Meta's global team will remain engaged with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to review how its algorithms and content moderation mechanisms function and whether they comply with Indian regulations. Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is also expected to meet Meta representatives as part of the ongoing discussions, sources said. The talks are part of the government's wider effort to improve accountability among digital platforms.

The government has maintained that while social media platforms play an important role in communication, innovation and public participation, companies must ensure user safety and follow India's legal framework. Officials have highlighted the need for greater transparency in algorithm-based recommendations, faster responses to unlawful content requests and stronger safeguards against online misuse.

The discussions are not limited to Meta. The government is also engaging with other major platforms, including X and Telegram, over concerns surrounding deepfakes, child abuse material and other forms of harmful content. Officials said the consultations will examine the effectiveness of existing moderation tools, the ability of platforms to detect illegal material and their compliance with requests from Indian authorities.

The Centre's outreach comes as artificial intelligence-driven content creation and manipulation tools have increased concerns over the spread of misleading and harmful material online. Deepfake videos, synthetic media and other AI-generated content have emerged as key challenges for regulators worldwide, prompting governments and technology companies to explore stronger detection and response mechanisms.

The ongoing dialogue reflects India's attempt to balance digital innovation and freedom of expression with the need for stronger online safety measures. Officials indicated that discussions with major technology companies will continue as the country works to strengthen its digital governance framework and ensure that platforms operating in India follow responsible content management practices.
