White House Confirms Trump's Attendance at FIFA World Cup Final

White House confirms Trump will attend Sunday's World Cup final.

The White House has confirmed that US President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, marking his first appearance at the tournament. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the decision during a media briefing, describing Trump's attendance as the culmination of what the administration called the most watched, most secure, and most successful FIFA World Cup ever hosted in the United States. The President is also scheduled to attend a reception hosted by FIFA at Trump Tower in New York on Friday ahead of the championship match, highlighting the close engagement between the US administration and football's governing body during the tournament.

Leavitt said the President's attendance would serve as a symbolic conclusion to a tournament that showcased the United States' ability to host one of the world's largest sporting events. While confirming Trump's presence at the final, she declined to say whether he would be supporting either Spain or Argentina. The question comes after Trump made critical remarks about Spain during a NATO summit last week, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the country's position regarding the conflict involving Iran. Despite those comments, no official preference for either finalist has been announced by the White House.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously stated in June that Trump would attend the final at the stadium in New Jersey and present the World Cup trophy to the winning team, although the White House had not formally confirmed those plans until now. The confirmation reinforces the close working relationship that has developed between Infantino and Trump over recent years. Their association has been visible through multiple FIFA-related events held in the United States, including the World Cup draw in Washington, where Infantino presented Trump with a newly created FIFA peace prize.

Although Trump has not attended any matches during the tournament before the final, he has remained involved in discussions surrounding the competition. Earlier this month, he publicly confirmed that he had asked Infantino to review the red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun during a match against Bosnia. FIFA subsequently suspended Balogun's one-match ban ahead of the United States' next fixture against Belgium. However, despite the striker's availability, the host nation suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat and exited the competition in disappointing fashion.

Trump has also repeatedly credited his administration with helping secure the United States' successful bid to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico during his first term in office. The tournament has been presented by the administration as evidence of the country's capability to organize major international sporting events. White House officials have highlighted the competition's security arrangements, global audience, and logistical execution as significant achievements that strengthen America's reputation as a destination for world-class events.

The President's expected role in presenting the World Cup trophy also follows widespread attention surrounding last year's FIFA Club World Cup trophy ceremony in New Jersey. During that event, Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on stage during the team's celebrations, attracting considerable public discussion. Reports later indicated that he kept a replica of the Club World Cup trophy in his office. Sunday's final between Spain and Argentina is expected to conclude the tournament with one of football's biggest spectacles, while Trump's attendance is likely to add further international attention to the occasion.
