Which Indian Cities Offered the Cleanest Air this Week?

Five Indian cities recorded excellent AQI this week, offering clean, healthy air amid nationwide pollution.

As major Indian metropolitan areas like Delhi and Mumbai grapple with hazardous levels of air pollution this winter, several lesser-known or naturally advantaged cities across the country continue to enjoy remarkably clean air. According to the latest Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data from December 6, 2025, multiple locations recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) values in the 'Good' category (0-50), offering residents and visitors fresh, breathable conditions amid a national average that remains concerning. These pockets of pristine air quality stand out due to factors such as abundant greenery, minimal industrial activity, hilly terrain promoting better pollutant dispersion, and proactive local environmental measures.

Leading the list is Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu with an impressive AQI of just 20, followed closely by Damoh in Madhya Pradesh at 26 and Gangtok in Sikkim at 30. Ooty, the picturesque hill station also in Tamil Nadu, registered 31, while Mangalore in Karnataka rounded out the top five with 37. These figures reflect 24-hour averages, highlighting how southern and northeastern regions, along with select hill stations, consistently outperform northern plains during the pollution-heavy winter months, when stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and temperature inversions trap smog.

The clean air in these cities is attributed to their geographical advantages and lower population densities compared to megacities. For instance, Gangtok benefits from its high-altitude location in the Himalayas, which facilitates natural ventilation, while Ooty's elevation and surrounding forests act as natural air purifiers. Tirunelveli and Mangalore profit from coastal breezes and limited heavy industry, demonstrating how effective urban planning and preservation of natural surroundings can sustain excellent AQI levels even as neighbouring states face spikes.

This contrast underscores broader environmental successes in India, where initiatives under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) have helped certain areas maintain or improve air quality. As urban centres implement stricter measures like vehicle restrictions and dust control, these top-performing cities serve as models for sustainable development, proving that clean, fresh air remains achievable in the country despite ongoing challenges in more industrialised or landlocked regions.
