West Bengal Governor Defends Electoral Roll Revision Amid Political Firestorm

West Bengal Governor backs voter list update despite TMC opposition.

In a bold statement from Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on August 8, 2025, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose addressed the escalating controversy surrounding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Describing the initiative as a “routine” exercise, Bose emphasized its critical role in ensuring smooth and equitable voting processes across the nation.

“The SIR is a standard procedure by the Election Commission to guarantee free and fair elections,” Bose told reporters, underscoring the importance of an accurate electoral roll for democratic integrity. His remarks stand in stark contrast to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has fiercely criticized the SIR, alleging it is a covert attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

While acknowledging differing perspectives, Bose called for consensus, stating, It is the Election Commission’s duty to ensure every citizen can vote seamlessly.
