West Bengal CM Oath Ceremony To Be Held On May 9 After BJP Landslide Win

BJP announces May 9 oath ceremony for new West Bengal CM after sweeping election victory.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that the oath-taking ceremony for the new Chief Minister of West Bengal will be held on May 9, following what the party claims is a historic electoral victory in the state Assembly elections. The announcement was made by state BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, marking a major political transition after 15 years of governance by the Trinamool Congress.

The BJP said it has secured 206 seats in the Assembly, giving it a two-thirds majority and ending the long tenure of the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee. While the party has declared victory, it has not officially confirmed who will take oath as Chief Minister, though internal discussions are reportedly underway to finalize the leadership choice before the ceremony.

Among the frontrunners for the top post is Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition and a key figure in the BJP’s campaign in the state. Other prominent names being considered include Samik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, Nisith Pramanik, Agnimitra Paul, Roopa Ganguly, and Shankar Ghosh. Party leaders are expected to weigh both organisational experience and electoral performance before making a final decision.

The election result represents a significant political shift in West Bengal, where Mamata Banerjee, who also contested from Bhabanipur, reportedly lost her seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Several senior ministers from the outgoing government, including Bratya Basu, Manas Ranjan Bhunia, Shashi Panja, and Chandrima Bhattacharya, were also defeated, further weakening the Trinamool Congress leadership structure.

The BJP’s rise in West Bengal has been gradual but sharp, growing from a marginal vote share of around 4 per cent in 2011 to nearly 40 per cent in 2019, before securing 77 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections and now achieving a dominant majority. The party’s expansion has reshaped the state’s political landscape, displacing the Left and Congress as the principal opposition in earlier years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the mandate, stating that the “Lotus blooms in West Bengal,” and expressed confidence that the new government would work toward fulfilling public aspirations. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has alleged large-scale irregularities in the election process, claiming that over 100 seats were “looted” and calling the outcome “immoral.” Despite the setback, she has vowed that her party will rebuild and return stronger in future elections.
