West Bengal Assembly Elections To Be Held In Two Phases; Results On May 4

West Bengal will vote in two phases this election, a major reduction from the eight-phase polling held in 2021.

The Election Commission of India has announced that the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, a significant reduction from the eight phases used during the 2021 elections. The poll body also confirmed that counting of votes will take place on May 4, when the results determining the next state government will be declared.

The decision marks a major shift in the election schedule compared with the 2021 assembly polls, which were conducted over eight phases between late March and April. That extended schedule had drawn criticism from several political parties and observers who argued that the long campaign period intensified political tensions and stretched administrative resources.

According to officials, the shorter two-phase polling plan is intended to streamline the electoral process while still ensuring adequate security arrangements and logistical management across the state. The Election Commission typically staggers polling in large or politically sensitive states to allow for the movement of central security forces and election personnel between constituencies.

West Bengal is one of India’s most politically contested states, and assembly elections there often attract national attention. The polls will determine the composition of the state legislative assembly and decide which party or coalition forms the next government for the upcoming term.

Major political parties are expected to ramp up their campaigning in the coming weeks as the polling dates approach. With the election being held in fewer phases this time, the campaign period is likely to be more compressed, potentially intensifying political outreach and rallies across constituencies.

The announcement of the schedule formally sets the stage for the electoral contest in West Bengal. As preparations begin, authorities are expected to focus on ensuring smooth polling operations, security deployment, and voter participation ahead of the results scheduled to be declared on May 4.
