Weather Dept Predicts Rain and Thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu Until March 24
Thunderstorms and rain hit Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, bringing relief from rising heat.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning of thunderstorms accompanied by rain across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday, offering relief from rising temperatures as the summer season approaches.
Officials forecast partly to heavily cloudy skies in several areas, including Chennai, with light rain and isolated thunderstorms expected at one or two places throughout the day. In the city, overcast conditions will prevail, with intermittent spells of rain, thunder, and lightning providing a cooler and more comfortable atmosphere.
Temperatures across the region are likely to drop by up to 4 degrees Celsius over the next few days, according to the Meteorological Department. This gradual decline is expected to offer significant respite to residents who have faced heat and humidity in recent weeks. The rainfall pattern is anticipated to continue until March 24, suggesting several days of relatively cooler and pleasant conditions.

Over the past 24 hours, several parts of Tamil Nadu have already received rainfall. Chennai localities such as Kodambakkam, Choolaimedu, Vadapalani, Valasaravakkam, Porur, and Ramapuram recorded moderate rain, while suburban areas including Ambattur and Avadi experienced heavier showers accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds during the night. Residents reported a noticeable drop in temperature and improved air quality, welcoming the refreshing change.
Weather experts attribute the rainfall to evolving atmospheric conditions conducive to convective precipitation, particularly in the late evening and night hours. The showers have helped reduce heat intensity and improved outdoor comfort across urban and suburban areas.
Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms, especially in regions prone to lightning and strong winds, while encouraging citizens to enjoy the temporary relief brought by the rainfall. The sustained precipitation is expected to benefit agriculture, water reservoirs, and daily life in the state over the coming days.
