Water Crisis in Thane: 16 Fall Sick Amid Suspected Contamination in Shahapur
16 people fall ill in Thane’s Shahapur after suspected water contamination.
A water contamination crisis struck Chakkichapda village in Shahapur taluka, Thane district, leaving at least 16 residents ill after consuming polluted water. According to Dr. Ramesh Jadhav, medical officer at Pivli Primary Health Centre (PHC), affected individuals reported symptoms including loose motions and abdominal distress starting Wednesday.
While initial treatment was administered at Pivli PHC, the severity of symptoms necessitated the transfer of seven patients to Shahapur Sub-District Hospital for advanced care, with two others admitted to a private facility. Authorities have collected water samples for laboratory testing, with bacterial contamination suspected as the primary cause, though lab results are pending for confirmation.
In response, a medical camp has been established in Chakkichapda to screen residents, and villagers have been instructed to avoid the contaminated water source until further notice. Safe drinking water is being provided. Prakash Khodka, an office-bearer of Shramajivi Sanghatana, sharply criticized local authorities for their failure to address recurring water quality issues across multiple villages in the region.
