Wangchuk's Wife Gitanjali: 'No Treatment Without Our Consent'
Wangchuk's wife demands consent before any hospital treatment.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi early on Saturday after completing 21 days of an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. His hospitalisation came after his health reportedly deteriorated during the prolonged protest. The shift was carried out amid heightened security arrangements, with police personnel deployed both inside and outside the hospital to maintain order and regulate access to the treatment area.
Following Wangchuk's admission, his wife Gitanjali J. Angmo reached the hospital and appealed to the authorities not to administer any oral or intravenous treatment without obtaining the family's consent. She said that all medical interventions should be undertaken only after consultation with family members, emphasising that no treatment should proceed without their approval. Her statement came shortly after Wangchuk was transferred from the protest site to the hospital.
According to the Delhi Police, the decision to hospitalise Wangchuk was taken on the advice of medical experts after concerns were raised about his health condition. Police officials said the transfer was carried out in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court, which had been monitoring the matter in view of the activist's prolonged fast. Authorities maintained that the action was taken solely on medical grounds to ensure his well-being.

Hospital officials and security personnel imposed restrictions inside the medical facility following Wangchuk's admission. According to officials, the activist has been admitted on the eighth floor of the hospital, while public access beyond the sixth floor has been restricted. A significant police presence was also maintained outside the hospital premises to manage visitors and ensure security during his treatment.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk's protest movement continues despite his hospitalisation. Members of the All India Students' Association (AISA), including Neha, Aameen and Manish, have continued the hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of the activist's demands. The ongoing protest reflects continued backing from supporters and student organisations, who have pledged to maintain the agitation while Wangchuk receives medical care.
The hunger strike has drawn national attention over the past three weeks, with concerns growing regarding Wangchuk's health as the fast progressed. His transfer to Safdarjung Hospital marks a significant development in the protest, while discussions continue over his medical treatment and the demands raised during the agitation. Authorities are expected to closely monitor his condition as security remains heightened around the hospital premises.
