VVIP Vehicles in Bihar to Get Automatic Toll-Free Passage with New FASTag System

Bihar mandates special FASTags for VVIPs to bypass toll plazas instantly.

The Bihar Transport Department has formally launched a statewide drive to equip all VVIP government vehicles with “exempted FASTags,” ensuring instantaneous toll-free passage at every toll plaza across national highways and state roads without the need for vehicles to halt even momentarily.

A comprehensive list of beneficiaries has been notified, encompassing the Chief Minister, all state ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly when travelling in official vehicles, Chief Justices and judges of the Patna High Court, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, former Chief Ministers, Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of Parliament, and other constitutional dignitaries, thereby preserving long-standing protocol privileges in a fully digital format.

Transport Minister Shravan Kumar clarified that the initiative strictly adheres to the Government of India’s Standard Operating Procedure issued by the National Highways Authority of India, which now makes registration on the dedicated NHAI exemption portal mandatory within a three-month window, marking the end of the earlier practice of manual verification or physical exemption certificates at toll points.

Personalised letters have been dispatched to every eligible official and office-bearer, accompanied by step-by-step instructions for uploading complete vehicle details, including registration number, chassis number, and official allocation records, to obtain the specialised exempted FASTag that triggers automatic barrier lifting upon approach, thus eliminating delays that previously disrupted time-sensitive governmental schedules and security convoys.

The department has warned that non-compliance by the stipulated deadline will automatically revoke toll-exemption status, compelling even the highest dignitaries to pay regular toll fees, underscoring a nationwide shift toward transparency, accountability, and seamless integration of traditional privileges with modern electronic toll collection infrastructure.
