‘Vote Chor’ Slogans Echo in Parliament Complex

INDIA bloc accuses EC of voter roll manipulation.

Opposition leaders escalated their campaign against the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday, staging a dramatic protest within the Parliament complex over alleged irregularities in Bihar’s voter roll revision. Holding a massive banner featuring images of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, the MPs, led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, raised slogans accusing the EC of “vote chor” and “Silent Invisible Rigging” (SIR). The protest, joined by prominent figures like Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, underscored the opposition’s claim that the EC’s actions threaten free and fair elections ahead of Bihar’s upcoming assembly polls.

Kharge, sharing a video of the protest on X, condemned the EC for evading its constitutional duties. “INDIA bloc has raised serious questions with evidence, which the EC should answer by investigating, not intimidating the opposition!” he posted in Hindi, emphasizing the fight for voting rights “from the streets to Parliament.” The opposition alleges that the EC’s voter roll revision in Bihar is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters, a charge that has fueled disruptions in both Houses since the Monsoon session began on July 21. Apart from discussions on Operation Sindoor, parliamentary proceedings have been repeatedly stalled over the SIR issue.

The protest follows the EC’s Sunday press conference, which the opposition claims failed to address their concerns. INDIA bloc MPs have demanded a parliamentary debate on the voter roll revision, accusing the EC of ignoring evidence of manipulation. The banner’s provocative “vote chor” label reflects the opposition’s growing frustration, as they argue that the EC’s actions undermine democratic principles. The protest in the Parliament complex, a highly visible stage, aimed to draw public and political attention to their grievances.

The ongoing deadlock in Parliament highlights the deepening rift between the opposition and the EC. With Bihar’s elections looming, the INDIA bloc’s allegations of voter suppression have taken center stage, raising questions about electoral integrity. Opposition leaders have vowed to intensify their agitation, both inside and outside Parliament, until the EC provides transparent answers. Meanwhile, the disruptions have stalled legislative progress, frustrating efforts to address other pressing issues during the session.

As the controversy grows, the opposition’s protest signals a broader battle over democratic accountability. Kharge and his allies are framing the SIR issue as a test of the EC’s independence, urging citizens to join their call for protecting voting rights. With the Monsoon session nearing its end, the standoff shows no signs of resolution, setting the stage for a heated political showdown in the lead-up to Bihar’s polls.
