Volunteers Raise Awareness For Korattur Lake Restoration on World Lake Day

Members of the Korattur Aeri Pathukappu Makkal Iyakkam (KAPMI), a citizens’ movement, organised an awareness campaign calling for the restoration and protection of Korattur lake. The programme was held in connection with World Lake Protection Day, with volunteers raising slogans highlighting the need to safeguard the important water body. Residents and representatives of environmental organisations participated in the initiative.

KAPMI secretary S. Sekaran said the campaign brought together local residents and members of organisations including Exnora International and Puzhal Eri Pathukappu Makkal Iyakkam. Participants used the event to draw attention to the ecological importance of Korattur lake and the need for stronger measures to protect it. The organisers said continued public awareness was essential for ensuring that concerns surrounding the lake received greater attention.

One of the key demands raised during the campaign was that Korattur lake should be declared a bird sanctuary. The volunteers also called for measures to prevent sewage from being discharged into the lake. They said unchecked sewage inflow could adversely affect the water body's ecological condition and threaten the habitats of birds and other species that depend on the wetland.

The campaigners highlighted the wider environmental role played by Korattur lake. According to Sekaran, the water body supports biodiversity and contributes to groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas. The lake also has an important role in flood mitigation, making its preservation significant not only from an ecological perspective but also for the wider urban environment of Chennai.

The participation of residents and different environmental groups reflected concerns over the long-term health of the lake. The campaign sought to bring together citizens around demands for better protection and responsible management of the water body. Declaring the lake a bird sanctuary, according to the organisers, could provide greater recognition of its ecological value and strengthen efforts to protect its habitats.

The volunteers said sustained action would be necessary to preserve Korattur lake and prevent further pollution. Their demands focused on controlling sewage discharge, protecting biodiversity and recognising the lake's importance to the city's environmental balance. The awareness programme was intended to encourage greater public participation in conservation efforts and reinforce the need for authorities and communities to work together for the lake's long-term restoration.
