Vijay’s Father Calls for TVK-Congress Tie-Up to Revive Party Glory
Chandrasekhar urges alliance to boost Congress in Tamil Nadu polls.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s father, Veteran Filmmaker S A Chandrasekhar, has publicly advocated for an electoral alliance between his son’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Congress party ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Tiruvarur on January 29, 2026, Chandrasekhar emphasized that such a partnership could help the grand old party reclaim its fading influence in the state. He highlighted Congress’s historical legacy in India’s independence struggle but noted its current decline due to repeated alliances where it plays a supporting role to regional players.
Chandrasekhar revealed that TVK is open to extending support to Congress, positioning it as an opportunity for the national party to regain its “old glory.” He stated, “Congress has a history and a legacy… They have been giving support to other parties and are declining day by day, and Vijay is ready to give them support and get them back to their old glory. It is up to Congress to take this opportunity.” This comes amid growing speculation about TVK’s strategy, as Vijay aims to make a strong political debut after launching the party with a focus on anti-corruption and youth empowerment.
However, Chandrasekhar also acknowledged strong public sentiment favoring TVK contesting independently. He mentioned that many advisors and supporters are urging Vijay to go solo, confident in the party’s electoral prospects given Vijay’s massive fan base and star power. “People have been urging Vijay to contest on his own, assuring him of victory if he chooses to stand independently,” he added, underscoring the party’s rising momentum in Tamil Nadu’s competitive political landscape.

In response, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief K Selvaperunthagai dismissed the suggestion, asserting that the party is already energized under national leader Rahul Gandhi. “Look at our cadres, you will notice that they have had the boost already… Our leader Rahul Gandhi is giving us boost, horlicks and bournvita that we need. Nevertheless, I thank him for the offer,” Selvaperunthagai quipped, signaling no immediate interest in the proposed alliance.
As elections approach, this exchange highlights the shifting dynamics in Tamil Nadu politics, where new entrants like TVK challenge established alliances. Vijay’s entry has already stirred excitement, and any potential tie-up could reshape the Dravidian-dominated arena, though Congress’s reluctance suggests TVK may need to build its base on its own merits.
