Vijay Welcomes Supreme Court’s CBI Probe Order in Tamil Nadu Stampede Case
Supreme Court hands TVK exactly what they demanded amid tragedy.
Supreme Court has mandated a CBI investigation into the tragic Tamil Nadu stampede that claimed 41 lives at a TVK event in Karur last month, supervised by a panel led by retired Justice Ajay Rastogi. Actor-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), expressed hope that "justice will prevail" following the ruling.
The apex court's decision overturns the Madras High Court's order for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, noting that the Madurai Bench held proper jurisdiction. TVK had petitioned the Supreme Court against the high court's involvement, and party officials celebrated the outcome. "We are happy the Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe, which is exactly what we asked for," said TVK General Secretary (Propaganda and Policy) Arun Raj to NDTV. "We hope truth will prevail and justice will be served."
The stampede occurred during a crowded TVK gathering, resulting in fatalities among women and children. Arun Raj emphasized that the CBI would uncover the facts, adding that the party isn't commenting further pending the investigation. He also dismissed allegations that victim families were misled into supporting the CBI demand, stating, "A few victim families have changed their stand. We want the court to investigate this too. TVK did not file petitions on behalf of victims." Reports suggest some families, including one involving a father with alleged vested interests, flipped their positions.

Plans are underway for Vijay to visit Karur and meet the bereaved families, with the venue being finalized. In Delhi, TVK General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna revealed Vijay's personal commitment: "Mr. Vijay wants to adopt all affected families and be part of their life journey. He will provide for all the needs of those families throughout their lives."
The CBI must submit monthly reports to the oversight committee, which will set its own procedures. This development has sparked political speculation in Tamil Nadu, where the nascent TVK could become a kingmaker. Opposition parties like AIADMK and its ally BJP are reportedly eyeing alliances, though Vijay has maintained warm ties with AIADMK while firmly rejecting the BJP as his "ideological enemy." As the investigation unfolds, the incident's ripples may reshape the state's political landscape.
