Vijay Urges PM Modi To Fast-Track Godavari-Cauvery-Gundar River Linking Project

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fast-track the proposed Godavari-Cauvery-Gundar river linking project and grant it the status of a project of "national importance". In a letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay highlighted the need for coordinated action between the Centre and the beneficiary states to ensure timely execution of the ambitious water transfer initiative. He also suggested the creation of a dedicated Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) involving the Centre and participating states for effective implementation. The Chief Minister said early completion of the project would benefit people and farming communities across Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
According to Vijay, the river-linking plan could help address regional water shortages by transferring surplus floodwaters from water-rich river basins to areas facing persistent scarcity. He described the initiative as a sustainable approach to meeting growing water requirements and improving water availability in drought-prone regions. The Godavari-Cauvery-Gundar river linking project is part of a broader effort to connect major river systems and improve water distribution across states. Vijay pointed out that several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar, regularly face severe water shortages and drought-like conditions.
He said the project could provide relief to these areas by improving irrigation potential and strengthening water security for communities dependent on agriculture. In his communication to PM Modi, Vijay referred to the work carried out by the National Water Development Agency (NWDA), which has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Godavari-Pennar-Palar-Vellar link. The project forms the first phase of the larger river-linking proposal aimed at moving water from surplus regions to areas with greater demand. The Chief Minister stressed that advancing the project would require cooperation among all stakeholders and a structured implementation mechanism.

River-linking projects in India have been proposed as a way to tackle uneven water distribution caused by variations in rainfall patterns and geography. Supporters argue that such initiatives can improve irrigation, drinking water availability and flood management. However, they also involve complex issues, including environmental concerns, interstate water sharing agreements, land acquisition and financial requirements. Successful execution depends on coordination between central and state governments. Vijay's request comes at a time when water management remains a key concern for several southern states, particularly in regions affected by recurring drought conditions.
By seeking national importance status and an institutional framework for implementation, the Tamil Nadu government aims to accelerate discussions around the project and ensure greater participation from all concerned authorities. The Centre's response to the proposal will determine the next steps in advancing the river-linking initiative. If approved and implemented, the project could become a significant infrastructure effort aimed at improving water distribution across multiple states. However, detailed assessments, inter-state consultations and environmental evaluations will be necessary before any final decision is taken.
