Vijay Scheduled To Take Oath As Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Today After Meetings

Vijay is set to take oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after several political meetings.

C Joseph Vijay is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday after a week of intense political negotiations that included five days of discussions, four meetings with the Governor, and multiple rounds of coalition talks with potential allies. His elevation marks the formation of the first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in the state in nearly six decades.

The breakthrough comes after Vijay’s party, TVK, emerged as the single largest force in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with 108 seats in the 234-member House. However, the party initially fell short of the majority mark of 118, triggering a series of negotiations to secure additional support from post-poll allies.

In the early stages of government formation, TVK received support from the Indian National Congress, which holds five seats in the Assembly. Vijay first met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday to stake claim to form the government, but was informed that he still did not have the required majority to proceed.

Despite continued efforts, a second meeting with the Governor on Thursday did not yield a breakthrough, as the Raj Bhavan maintained that written proof of majority support had not been adequately established. According to officials, the Governor reiterated that a clear majority was essential before inviting any party to form the government.

A major shift occurred on Friday when the TVK received support from the CPI and the CPI(M), each of which holds two seats. The development pushed the alliance strength closer to the majority mark, though Vijay, who won from two constituencies and is required to vacate one, still faced a narrow arithmetic gap.

By Friday evening, Vijay held another round of discussions with the Governor, but the demand for written confirmation of at least 118 MLAs remained unresolved. The final consolidation of support, including additional smaller allies, eventually enabled TVK to cross the threshold and form the government, paving the way for Vijay’s swearing-in as Chief Minister.
