Vijay Announces TVK Candidates; Will Contest Two Constituencies in Tamil Nadu

Actor Vijay announces TVK candidates; will contest Perambur and Trichy East in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Actor-politician Vijay has announced that he will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from two constituencies — Perambur and Trichy East — under the banner of his newly formed party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Speaking at the event where the party released its full list of candidates, Vijay urged voters to give TVK a chance and highlighted the party’s poll symbol, the whistle. “Vote for whistle, it’s a whistle revolution election,” he said, emphasizing the party’s commitment to clean governance.

TVK is making its electoral debut in a highly competitive political environment. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has 234 constituencies, all of which will vote in a single phase on April 23. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) faces challenges from multiple directions: the AIADMK-BJP alliance is seeking a comeback, while a fourth front formed by S Ramadoss-led PMK and a party founded by late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s aide Sasikala is attempting to carve out its own influence.

The two constituencies Vijay is contesting are currently represented by the DMK. R.D. Sekar is the MLA from Perambur, while Inigo S. Irudayaraj represents Trichy East. Vijay’s decision to contest from these constituencies signals his intent to challenge established political figures and make a strong debut for TVK.

During the announcement, Vijay highlighted the party’s focus on ethical politics and grassroots leadership. “This is a meeting to announce the names of the protectors of people. Our candidates are from ordinary backgrounds; they are not heavyweights. Our MLAs should not have experience of looting, illegal mining, or assaulting journalists,” he said. He also criticized a DMK candidate facing corruption charges, underscoring TVK’s commitment to integrity.

Vijay described the election as a “two-cornered fight” between his party and the DMK-led coalition, positioning TVK as a fresh alternative. He also outlined key promises, including a drug-free Tamil Nadu, monthly support for unemployed youth over the age of 29, and legislation ensuring transparency and accountability in government job recruitment.

Political analysts note that while Vijay’s star power could attract attention, TVK is still untested in elections. The party’s performance in the April polls will indicate whether celebrity influence can translate into actual votes in a state known for intense political rivalries and multi-party contests.
