Vice President Unveils Coffee Table Book on Vithalbhai Patel During Constitution Day Event

The vice president unveils the Vithalbhai Patel book, urging legislators to strengthen democracy through dialogue, debate, and cooperation.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday unveiled a commemorative coffee table book on Vithalbhai Patel, the first Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly (1925-1930), at the Delhi Legislative Assembly as part of the nationwide celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. The event highlighted Patel’s pioneering role in establishing parliamentary traditions and underscored the continuing relevance of democratic dialogue in legislative functioning.

Addressing the gathering, the vice president stressed that democracy thrives on deliberation followed by collective cooperation. “Legislators should contribute to assembly proceedings through dialogue, debate, and discussion,” he said, adding that every section of society—from students and workers to entrepreneurs and industries—must actively practice the values and duties enshrined in the Constitution to strengthen nation-building.

The coffee table book, proposed by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, chronicles a century of India’s democratic evolution through rare archival photographs and key milestones, including the 2025 All India Speakers’ Conference that commemorated the centenary of Vithalbhai Patel’s historic speakership. Gupta described the publication as a tribute to India’s parliamentary heritage and a reminder of the responsibilities borne by elected representatives.

Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and cabinet minister Parvesh Sahib Singh were among the dignitaries present. Saxena called Constitution Day an occasion to renew commitment to the document’s ideals, while the Chief Minister described the Constitution as a symbol of national spirit and unity that “details the long journey of our democracy” and deserves to be read by every citizen to inspire pride in India’s democratic legacy.

A three-minute short film on the Constitution produced by the central government was also screened during the ceremony. The event reinforced the message that robust parliamentary discourse and public awareness of constitutional values remain essential for sustaining India’s democratic framework as the nation approaches eight decades of the Constitution’s adoption.
