Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday paid homage to the victims of the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts, describing the tragedy as a “dark and painful chapter” in India’s history. In a message posted on X, he recalled the devastating events of February 14, 1998, when a series of coordinated explosions shook the city of Coimbatore and claimed numerous innocent lives.

The blasts occurred during a visit by senior BJP leader L. K. Advani and left several people dead while injuring many others. The coordinated attacks sent shockwaves across the country, raising serious concerns about internal security and communal harmony. The Vice President reflected on the fear and uncertainty that gripped the city in the aftermath of the explosions.

Sharing a personal account, Radhakrishnan recounted his narrow escape from one of the blast sites. He described the frantic rescue efforts, with bystanders and officials rushing the injured to hospitals, as among the most painful memories of his life. The scenes of chaos and anguish, he said, remain deeply etched in his mind even decades later.
